b'Effects of Heat and ColdChapterThe human body is designed and equipped to maintain a core temperature around 37C. Human body mechanisms generate and regulate heat when the environment is cold and conversely dissipate and lose heat when the environment is hot.Illness occurs when the body is overwhelmed and cannot cope with extremes of heat or cold. Other contributing factors include clothing, wind, humidity, working and living environment, physical activity, age and general health even though temperatures may not be extreme. The illness slowly progresses and can become life threatening. It occurs commonly in very young or elderly people whose temperature regulating mechanisms may be under developed or impaired. Those at Risk:A person who is immobilised or trapped such as a road or farming accident.Serious injuries such as burns, spinal and fractures.Young and elderly.A person under the influence of alcohol/drugs.An unconscious person.People with health problems including vomiting, diarrhoea and cardiovascular disease. Those who work outdoors.37CBody Temperature28CAir TemperatureThe body is usually warmer than the surrounding air, so it tends to lose heat to the air.132 Heat and Cold Emergency'
