Professional management of records is the best protection against litigation and prosecution. The employer is to maintain written records of all illnesses and injuries. Accurate recording and documentation of patient information is the responsibility of the first aider.The responsibility lies with the employer to maintain first aid equipment and services. A first aider cannot certify death.An awareness of how a persons culture influences their values, beliefs, behaviour and assumptions enables a first aider to manage the patient with a better understanding and with sensitivity to their cultural diversity. Following any first aid emergency in the workplace, it is important to review the first aid response process and implement any identified improvements to workplace procedures.During this review/debriefing process it is essential that the confidentiality of the patients medical information is maintained.Also important is the need to be sensitive to the emotional and psychological state of those involved in the incident and consideration given to formal counselling or support provided for managing stress.
